The stage area gets used in two distinctively different ways

When used as a stage for performers

This must only be done for a formal presentation or artistic production or rehearsal. The stage is not a play area for spontaneous enactment – eg during a private children’s party.
When people are performing on the stage then the area immediately underneath the stage front must be kept clear of people – ie any seated audience should be back at least 2m.

When used as an extension to the hall floor area

Organised events may place tables and chairs on the stage – using it as a balcony to watch a performance taking place on the main hall floor – but only when the front of the stage has an adequate barrier approved by the UVH H&S Officer. UVH provides the facilities to establish this barrier – see an approved arrangement below.

The stage area must not be used simply to gain additional area for the movement of the general public around the full hall and stage areas. Its use during jumble sales and exhibitions should be minimised and then only be for specific organisational use (ie for event organisers not the general public). The event organisers should then ensure that all their helpers are briefed on the potential risks relating to people on and around the front of the stage.
